Importance of school support assistants in education06 May
School support assistants can be responsible for listening to kids read and reporting their findings back to the teacher. TA’s help teachers by preparing resources such as photocopying their research and setting up equipment at the start of a lesson. Teacher Assistants have the unique opportunity of connecting with students at a level that is slightly different to the teacher. This gives them the chance to build relationships and do some of the deeper work that is necessary when working with students. In countries such as the United States school support assistants can also take on the job of a substitute teacher when the teacher is not available. In Australia this is not the case, but they can find themselves in this situation, and although it is not appropriate, they usually are the one person that knows how the class is run. The duties of a school support assistant can some times differ from one school to another although their underlying duties remain primarily the same throughout. People who become teaching assistants often have a background in childcare and nursery. However even though these seem to be a good starting point many school support assistants are not properly trained. This is an area that needs to be improved, as Support Assistants in schools are essential to each child’s education. Are you a Support Assistant? Do you know someone who is? How important are they? 4 Responses to “Importance of school support assistants in education”Leave a ReplyYou Are HereTim Wicks is an educator and NLP Master Practitioner who craves interesting conversations. Thanks for bringing up this topic Bill, It is one that is close to my heart. In many cases I wonder just how some classes would function with out an assistant. In fact I am sure that on occasion the TA carries the class.
Thanks to all the support assistants out there, you are doing a great job.
Where I work the Teacher Assistants have differing roles and names. Special Education Support Assistants (SESOs) are highly skilled in the care AND education of children with special needs.
There are some in our school that are in their second or third year of their teaching degree.
Absolutely, I agree with Bill. TA can bring a condusif class situation. But unfortunately, in my country there isn’t TA in every single school, altough they are very important part in a class.
Generally we just have a teacher in a class that have about 30-45 students there. And most of teacher can’t control the class, and the learning doesn’t go well. I’m apprehensive with this condition.
Hi Elung,
I trained teachers in Malang in 2006 (over 300) and class numbers and lack of control was the predominant complaint. Some (maybe many) teachers were afraid of not having control, it was touching that they would share such fears, yet devastating to know that fellow teachers were feeling this way.
It is interesting that you say “in my country there isn’t TA in every single school”, and I know this is a fact, as I have seen it for myself. Teaching conditions in Indonesia are generally VERY difficult. A TA in each class would go a long way to helping the learning outcomes of the students, as well as the sanity of the teacher.
Thanks for your comment Elung.
